If a creator sells fabric plushies, but I put in all the work of engineering a crochet pattern for that plushie, and it's obviously that plushie design. I don't credit the original creator, my pictures of a finished product does not come in the same color as the original creators (I've seen that happen where the Red Angry Bird design was marketed in pig lime green).

I know it's morally wrong, but is it LEGALLY wrong. I just feel like since I did the engineering, I should get all the money selling the pattern, not the original creator.

Thanks!dysceahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10957522993998481634noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241896252474858543.post-6450563940678042772015-08-23T11:07:29.151-07:002015-08-23T11:07:29.151-07:00As far as I understand it, no :/ Those patterns ar...As far as I understand it, no :/ Those patterns are for 'personal use only', meaning they expect you to keep, gift, or donate the items you make, not sell them. If I purchased an official licensed pattern of Disney characters (by Leisure Arts), may I sell what I make following the official pattern? In the booklet, it only states that you cannot reproduce the pattern, but it does not say anything about the finished products.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16692610248079431122noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241896252474858543.post-44990740968601923742015-08-15T17:44:56.219-07:002015-08-15T17:44:56.219-07:00That must have been so frustrating for the artist....That must have been so frustrating for the artist. I've seen other indie artists struggle with major corporations taking their designs and printing them on clothing. Sometimes it feels like crafters are willing to ignore or excuse copyright infringement when it's a little guy stealing intellectual property from a big corporation, but it's important to remember that it is the same mindset at work when the positions are reversed. I think the only way to help all artists protect themselves is to remain fiercely honest.Illuminate Crochethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08750043590498446248noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7241896252474858543.post-61555145869190904382015-08-13T20:27:38.226-07:002015-08-13T20:27:38.226-07:00Thank you for this post - it is so important to ke...Thank you for this post - it is so important to keep reminding people about these issues. Copyright is a serious problem in all industries but especially in the creative industries.
Just last week copyright infringement and plagiarism made the news here in Australia.
The Australian Football League hired an agency to come up with a logo for their 'multicultural' round and they blatantly stole the design of an Adelaide-based artist Tyson Beck from his online portfolio! Good on the artist for fighting to protect his name.
The act is deplorable but I am glad it made the headlines to reinforce that it is NOT OK to copy someone else's work.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-08-07/afl-apologises-to-adelaide-graphic-designer-for-plagiarism/6679488

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/afl-apologises-to-australian-design-expert-after-copying-his-art-work/story-fni5f22o-1227472829223
Jodiebodiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11377052537742885631noreply@blogger.com
